Ethics and recruiting
Friday, 7 February 2003

Readers who think I exaggerated in my article Sharp agency tactics to watch out for should glance at the article "Ethics and recruiting" in this month's MIS magazine. It details the experiences of an anonymous CIO. An extract is reproduced below.

"... a number of agencies are advertising (apparently non-existent) positions on their Web sites and in the papers.

On applying for the position, if you look to be any good, they call you in for an interview. During the course of the interview the recruiter enquires whether you are up for any positions through other agencies. Being helpful, you mention the positions and companies you’ve been put forward for. The recruiter duly takes note of this and you are shortly on your way, often never to hear from them again.

However, this is where the plot thickens. Taking the information you’ve supplied to the recruiter, he/she then rings the companies you’ve been presented to by other agencies and offers them other candidates on their books. They are not, of course, going to put your name forward as you’ve already been presented by a competitor. The end result is you could potentially have shot yourself in the foot by being helpful and honest in your interview with the agency."
