A view of outsourcing from the USA
Wednesday, 13 August 2003
One of our American readers has sent an opinion piece about how outsourcing looks from her perspective. Since the USA is probably 12 months ahead of us with this trend, Australian readers are advised to consider the implications.
Do you know where your corporate and personal data is?
The latest trend American corporations are embracing is sending white-collar jobs to third world countries. Companies like IBM, Oracle, Dell, HP, and AT&T are sending their systems development and testing outside the United States. American Express, insurance companies, Capital One route call centre calls to places like the Philippines and India. MRIs are being read overseas.
Even welfare recipients are discussing their questions with a representative in India. Does anyone see the irony in that? An American citizen has to collect welfare when a job that should be available has been shipped overseas!
This means that your personal information has left this country and is now in a foreign environment.
If you have an account with American Express, the call centre located in India has access to your personal information. This could include your spending habits, occupation, address, phone number, financial information, and your social security number.
Medical transcriptions are also done overseas and are often misinterpreted and documented incorrectly.
Large companies insist that to stay competitive they must outsource white-collar jobs. Did these companies fully disclose that your data might be released outside the United States? In India, a call centre representative earns an average of $4,000 per year. The same job in the United States will pay $30,000 per year. Of course to the CEOs this makes perfect business sense. The average IT worker in India has a salary of $5,300 per year while the same American will average over $50,000 per year.
If you've been laid off by one of these decisions made for “good business sense” it should be your choice whether or not you want to support these companies. You should demand from your insurance, telephone, credit card companies, and medical testing labs full disclosure as to where your records are located. When you are talking to a customer care representative in India a fellow American has lost their job!
Call centres are not the only jobs being taken away from the United States. Many company’s tools are developed and tested outside the country and non-immigrant labour is brought in. AT&T has a contract with IBM. IBM is sending thousands of people into the unemployment lines in return for cheap overseas labour. Contractors are bought in to AT&T on H1, H4, L1, and L2 visas, forcing out American workers. There are well over a million temporary workers in the United States today and it doesn’t include all of those with expired visas that the INS won’t ever track down.
We can blame Republicans or Democrats but it comes down to corporate greed. The CEOs in this country do not value their employees. To avoid public and political outrage, these people will insist they can’t find qualified Americans who will stay in a job. They say Americans aren’t as ambitious as those from these developing countries. This is a lie!
Hiring practices in the US include interviews, references, background checks, and even drug testing. Do our corporate giants have any idea what the history of these employees in these third world countries is? How much is this personal and corporate information worth in the hands of terrorists?
These same CEOs have their own personal data going across the globe and the day it’s realized perhaps there will be some action. Joe Smith CEO has an American Express Card. His social security number is available to people all over the world. Any terrorist with access to that information can easily identify targets to disrupt our economy.
In this post-9/11 era, our Homeland Security needs to be a top priority. Imagine the potential risk of the data getting outside one of these countries into that of a terrorist. If your data is outside this country what guarantee do you have that it is secure? How do you know the foreign company adheres to the same security, ethics, and hiring practices as in the U.S?
The bottom line is that we have no idea where our social security numbers, credit reports, and medical records are. We have no idea the people employed and their loyalty to safety of the American people. We don’t know if this cheap labour is willing to sell proprietary information for a few bucks.
We do know that America’s skilled high technology employees are being displaced in the hundreds of thousands. These skilled people who create our satellites, defence weapons, medical research tools, our space program, and a host of other leading edge technology are disappearing. As we get laid off, 40% of those talented people will not bother looking for an IT job again. Kids headed to college are beginning to realize Computer Science and Engineering are dead end jobs.
Where will our country be if we rely on other countries to supply us with everything computer or engineering related? We know what happened moving our automobile manufacturing offshore. I don’t feel comfortable buying American cars.
Our call centres provided us a certain level of customer service and included things as simple understanding of English slang, the American “accent”, and a simple “Have a nice day”. The cultures between America and these third world countries differ and we are no longer treated like we were.
If you are unemployed or know somebody who is, corporate greed has taken away jobs for our millions of qualified unemployed and handed over your personal history in the process. Decide for yourself if you want to support those companies because only the top brass makes millions more for themselves while the rest of us head to flipping burgers.
Some companies already doing this are:
- IBM
- HP
- Dell
- AT&T (via IBM)
- Microsoft
- American Express
- Capital One
- Nike
- Convergsys
- Oracle
- AOL

Don't Forget about GE Financial AssuranceLet's not forget about GE Financial Assurance (GEFA) as the undisputed leader of outsourcing jobs to India (better known in company circles as GECIS). What should gall the average reader is the fact that every time this company does a "re-orgainization" and determines that domestic personnel are no longer needed, the EXACT SAME roles suddenly pop up again overseas. Not exactly the "integrity" model you heard Jack Welch barking about nor the torch being carried by Jeff Immelt... I have a new slogan for this company... GE- Devastation at Work Dick Gunn, 09/10/2003 04:52:18 AM Former Capital OneToo true, my job sailed out of here and is handled overseas now. Capital One tracks a lot of personal info - more than you know probably - it is in "their" hands now. Michelle, 09/16/2003 12:28:56 PM America Made in China? Say NO to "Made in China"!Hi, This is in response to your article on outsourcing of American white collar jobs. I would like to bring to your attention that China has taken advantage of outsourcing from the USA unlike any other country in the world. China is the reason why the US economy is in such a dire state today. China has practically bought North America single handedly if not the entire world. Why do I say this? Well today, China makes everything starting from such simple things as American toilet paper all the way to the most expensive electronics there is in the American market. That would include all the jobs that go with the manufacturing process. Chinese labor is cheap money wise. In China, money(price) determines how goods are made and not quality of the product or customer satisfaction. When a foreign company goes to China, a manufacturer there asks the foreign company to choose how much it is willing to pay for a unit of the product. For example a HP digital camera can be made in China for $400, $300, $200,.... or even for $ 20! Well, what does the American manufacturer choose? Of course the least expensive one! So what happens next is that the American manufacturing facility is shut down, thousands of skilled white collar jobs lost, the digital camera orders placed in China for $ 20/unit, the cameras shipped back to North America and sold for $ 350- $400 a piece. So we the American consumers now, pay just as much money for the digital camera but the only difference being, we are now getting a much much more "inferior product", at the cost of so many white collar jobs being lost in America and at the cost of "precious quality". Quality of the product, quality of life in America, social well-being ; everything is on a path towards decay. In the process, the giant corporations are getting richer and richer, all in the name of advancement of human civilization. And all that the American government can do is stand by and watch the game, and also ofcourse unveil thousands of economic recovery packages (to show the American people that it is doing something tangible to rescue the situation), and spend trillions of dollars on national defense all in the name of saving the nation! Isn't it ironical my friends, that we "the people of America" are the cause of our own demise? Where is our nationalism? Where is the American dream? Is this what we all want?....... A day will come in the not so distant future when we will have to put up a sign with "America on SALE" written on it, ..... "The Highest Bidder Takes it ALL"! And China would only be glad to own us! ........."America Made in China"... sounds cool doesn't it? An American , 10/18/2003 04:59:07 PM Tax On OutsourcingI think that the outsourcing problem could easily be fixed by putting a tax on outsourcing. Ideally the tax would cover the cost difference between employing someone in the US and someone from an outsourcing country. That way we wouldn't close the door to poorer countries, but we would also protect our own people. JS, 01/13/2004 12:16:57 PM CommentYes, The dollar goes a long way in third world countries and companies in the USA are saving billions of dollars by shipping out non-core functions. But, Research shows that for every dollar that moves out of the USA, an additional $1.20 is created. The company can plough this money back into the American workforce, through expansion and by diversifying their enterprise. This will lead to the creation of more jobs in the USA. Not to mention, of course, the gains brought in by efficiency and market competitiveness. Thanks, Renjith Moolayil, 07/22/2004 03:27:42 AM GE OffshoringAs a former employee of Power Systems who was let go due to poor economic conditions. I found it amazing that our department lost 8 people in the US, but gained 12 in India. Needless to say, we trained those 12 here int he US on 3 to 6 month rotations before they gave us all the axe. My Team Lead went from having 3 domestic employees and 2 Indian employees to 1 domestic employee and 5 Indians. GE is one of the worst for offshoring. If you are in IT, do not go to GE, you will lose your job. Its a corporate initiative. Laid off, 07/27/2004 07:50:32 PM to renjithYou are obliviously employed in India and believe the corporate rhetoric that they feed you. You show me one, just one legitamate study that shows this 120% you speak of. I don't believe it. I know for a fact that the job I used to do is now being done by 4, yes 4 Indians, and they can't keep up. They do not have the training or experience and consequently the systems they manage are breaking. Gee, this is really cost effective now isn't it. If India is so great, why do you come to the US to get educated? Why, because our colleges and universities in an attempt to be "diverse" bend over backwards for you and your people and let you into this country. You get assistantships handed to you not because your qualified, but because its the only way to demonstrate and income to the INS, and our Universities gladly hand them out to you to be diverse. Meanwhile, the tax paying American Grad student can't get shit. You can dispute this, but these FACTS come straight from the Graduate School of a major public University that I attend. US, wake up, we let these people in our country, educate them, then let them leave with our jobs. Until CEO's and CIO's get outsourced to some Indian MBA for 1/10th the cost, this will continue. Do not believe the crap these Indians try to feed you to justify this situation. Tell them to go back to drinking and worshiping cow urine. Kiss My Ass, 07/27/2004 07:59:24 PM Not Just the YanksThis is happening in aussie to. Telstra for one are doing this Were will it end? Regards Greg Greg, 08/01/2004 09:14:46 AM The real problem is that the US dollar is overvalued. The real problem is that the US dollar is overvalued. If it weren't overvalued, we wouldn't have the huge trade deficits that we do. If the dollar falls 50% relative to the rupee, the Indian programmer just got 100% more expensive. If the dollar falls 50% relative to the yaun, those Chinese imports now cost twice as much. If the dollar kept falling, at some point, Americans would cost as much or less than the Indians and Chinese. Countries like China can play stupid currency games by buying dollars. This changes the situation, because now instead of a rising currency making their exports more expensive, an overheating economy and inflation make their exports more expensive. Either way, their exports get more expensive. Why will the dollar fall? Supply and demand. The US is flooding the world with dollars with its 500-600 billion dollars a year trade deficit. More outsourcing will increase the trade deficit. Some have argued that the US will export all of its jobs. The US cannot export all of its jobs to outsourcers. At that point, the US would be producing nothing and the value of the dollar would be worthless. At that point, the US companies could not afford the then infinitely expensive Indians and Chinese. Outsourcing will eventually go away as an issue. Outsourcing and the trade deficit will lead to a falling dollar, which will make the Indians and Chinese a lot more expensive than they are now. Paul, 09/04/2004 06:55:04 PM Immature articleI agree and appreciate the thoughts of the writer, but it seems the writer is too narrow minded and has a biased opinion when he talks of opposing outsourcing. It would make more sense to use articles of people who are non biased and provide intellegent arguments to support their view point. The argument given in this article seems like what small kids would do to make their view point considered. Very very immature article. Matt Roberts, 09/07/2004 06:10:48 PM outsourcingThis is a dynomite article , I wish you could e-mail this to the democratic party Attn: john kerry it's time some one starts to fight for our jobs. The real problem as I see it is the corporate stockholders. If they don't have a bigger profit every year and make billions in profit they go overseas, they only care for themselfs. So much for American Patriotism. It can make me sick. Ann Frediani ann frediani, 09/15/2004 08:48:24 PM think about itWhoever wrote this is just a simple a-hole! quit blaming american companies who outsource their call center in third world countries... think about it.. your products suck and you american consumers suck..and WE from the third world country benefit from you GUYS..thanks! KEEP IT UP! americana, 09/23/2004 09:35:18 AM Your Money is in Safe HandsIts rather unfortunate that people in the US fear that their personal data is under threat because it has been outsourced to countries like India, Phillippines etc,. Its a fact that three out of five doctors in the US are Indians, when you can trust your life with an Indian, then why cry hoarse for the 'by-products' of life. The chapters in WTO deals at length about making the world a truely open market where talent, opportunity and specilization of skills meets that would reduce the unequitable distrubution of wealth across the world and bridge gap between developed and developing economies that would make the world a better place to live. Therefore it not only makes buziness sense, but also is a pre-requisit for the healthy functioning of the international economics in the present era to view the world as one large market where talents and skills flourishes. The CEO's in high-end companies like IBM, GE, Microsoft, Capital One, American Express etc are not fools to think that their buziness will prosper if the outsourse their services to developing countries. People in these countries are highly skilled and well trained to handle the required job. The coustomers of Capital One need not about their personal details, its in the best hands. It makes it worthy to state here that more and more identity theft originate in the US rather that from these developing countries. Its also unfortunate that the preceding article goes on length in accussing that personal information of Capital One may land-up with terrorist just because its been outsourced to the third country. The author's imagination is certainly a product of excessive jingoism displayed by my many individuals in post-9/11. Outsourcing is here to stay and many wise Americans already appriciating this. My job went to India. I was offered a job with Capital One approximately 55 miles away from my home in Richmond,VA. when their Fredericksburg site was closed. I was told that the Richmond site was already overstaffed, that they would continue to outsource, and continue to tighten performance standards. I decided not to commute to Richmond. Often Capital One will claim that positions are going to a U.S. based company. This is true........ a U.S. based company that has contracted the work out to India. So many companies claim that Americans don't want to work. Americans don't want to work for slave wages is what they mean. The government needs to make it less attractive for businesses to send work and personal information overseas. Pooh, 10/26/2004 10:52:42 PM Similar Outsourcing in AustraliaI've now got the pleasure of after ten years of hard work for one of Australia's major companies, to now teach a fairly inexperienced overseas person to learn to do my job (by rote mind you as they have no actual knowlege of the products/software used) in about 5 weeks. I'm sure they'll do a "great" job and the while the system fails through their errors, the best part is that "we" in Aus are still the ones responsible for the system so will have to wipe up their mistakes. Such a great industry IT has become. Not to mention the depression, total lack of morale and general hatred towards our management as there no been absolutely NO regards given to how it's actually effected the staff here. We can only hope tp find better careers but when then count the money - who know's what else will go overseas too? Bj, 11/07/2004 12:59:20 AM Latest exampleThe same is happening in the UK and thousands of jobs are being lost to overseas whilst the same corporations still expect to sell their goods or services in the UK. http://www.wjla.com/news/stories/1104/186422.html Mightyman, 11/11/2004 03:54:26 PM OutsourcingAdd CIGNA Insurance to your list...They have been outsourcing Medical for years and now they are outsourcing Dental Claims...Americans were only paid 7.50 per hour to do this job, now it will only cost them 4.50 per hour. Perrywinkle, 01/10/2005 01:53:56 AM People of the USYour Doctors are too stupid to read EKG's, MRI's and Xray's. Your people are too stupid to support IT. Poonjab, 03/02/2005 03:59:20 AM Welcome to Global MarketHello World, Welcome to Globalisation. Dont do all sort of huff & puff and screaming. We are in the modern age where everything is globalised. You have to live with the change and adjust accordingly. You are either ignorant or stupid that you dont even understand how the world operates. You can expect globalisation to be in effect only if it benefits you. Welcome to the real world. Sudhakar, 03/05/2005 03:09:03 AM GLOBALISATIONThis is about the article of outsourcing American jobs to third world countries espically india. It was America and other developed countries who initiated globalisation for selling their goods in third world countries like India. In India now there is a number of american companies . Companies like Colacola,Pepsi,Mcdonalds,Citibank, etc are in India.Due to these multinational companies Indian industries have sufferd a heavy loss.Globalisation has affected us heavily. Outsourcing is also a part of globalisation. So if outsourcing is causing loss of American jobs it is the policy of globalisation to be blamed. It is just give and take policy.India,China and other third world countries cannot suffer one sidedly. ANITHA ANANDAKRISHNAN, 03/07/2005 03:37:22 PM Capital OneLooks like the employees of Hibernia will soon be looking for jobs also. Rich Fairbank and Gregor Bailar love to outsource so I wonder if India will be getting more of our countries jobs. Start looking Hibernia. Tired Of Outsourcing, 03/08/2005 09:56:14 AM Oh BoyIf you're in a technical position, you should be gone soon. Capital One is not a technical company...or a call center company...or a company for anyone that's not a project manager...or a ceo, cio, dio...or whatever. Hey, I'm on welfare and go to public healthcare. Thanks everyone for the support. Qwerty, 03/27/2005 07:27:42 PM CAPITAL ONE SUCKSIt is true what you all say. At first I doubted this, but after a few months with Capital One (with a 500 dollar limit), it seems you can never get out because of charges that they impose on you. It is true what has been said in the past that a "fool and his money are soon parted". That holds true with Capital One credit card. Get RID OF IT AND I MEAN FAST! I did that and life has been easier and better by just using cold cash. It you do not need it, don't buy it. Buy only what you really NEED to survive in this world. Take my advice: Stay away from Capital One. It is true that Dell and other top dog, money-making mongruls ( is that like a wild dog..hmmmmmm)..they should be called mongrels...whatever... They are sending out all of your information to India along with HFC (the big lending company), Dell, Capital One, etc, etc. Stay alert America and look around you to see who knows what about you. I guess they do not care about letting our information possibly fall into the hands of the terrorists as you know your information is already in the mid-east. Thanks and look up to see what's coming down, Peter Peter, 03/29/2005 02:01:03 PM Arrogant people posting here and chastising Americans grieving over their lost jobs will learn soon enough that the joke is on them. You'll know all too soon what the "real world" and globalization is all about. It's about exploiting workers wherever and however you can. It's about great wealth for a few and pain for many. It's about a life filled with stress and disappointment. It's about watching the wheel turn and another group of victims step forward eagerly with hope in their eyes. It's about watching another generation succumb to maya. And on and on and on ... Learn your lessons well, my friends. And then look back on your words in these days and lament. Hankomatic, 06/19/2005 06:30:41 AM Outsourcing: Still LousyI've been outsourced from my US IT job at Capital One and will be gone in a couple months thanks to the country whose main export is the surgical removal of American jobs. One gentleman suggested that we are "too stupid" to interpret MRI's or support IT. We INVENTED most of it. The only reason that the India people who are coming for my job will know how to do it is if I teach them, and I refuse. I don't care if I get tossed out without a dime. India stole my daughter's customer service job, and now they stole my IT job. They must be proud to have stolen so many jobs. Excellent work. Couldn't a country with 3 times the population of the U.S. have its own industry? OutsourcedYank, 06/19/2005 09:50:25 AM Just a ThoughtHello people! I was just surfing the net to learn more about the company I work for, and then I was brought to this site. I find it interesting to see a site like this where I can see bad opinions about Capital One. Well, I just like to make a comment re what I have read so far. First one, about Capital One's overlimit and past due fee charges. Yes these charges are frustrating but as I understand, when a person owe money to someone, he should be responsible to make payments on TIME! You're the one who borrowed money, so take the consequences! Another thing, I find it funny for people to blame third world countries for STEALING jobs from them. Well, I highly suggest for these people to look into dictionary for the word stealing. When something is being offered to you and you accept it, that is not stealing. Why blame people who just do their jobs right? Why don't you look in the mirror to see what's wrong with you? By then you might understand why your jobs are being taken away from you. It might be incompetency?... I am in what you call third world country, and I have the job that you claim yours. But I want to assure you that we have strict policies and standards in our job that we follow. And mind you, I don't care about your personal information. I don't have any use to that. =p AJ, 07/08/2005 10:10:05 PM capital one outsourcingCapital One has also now axed its IT staff and they will be attempting to run the companies core IT functions from India. The Indian replacement staff are highly inexperienced. They may posses the best paper qualifications you can buy in India but they lack the realworld experience required to manage an operation of this size. I disagree with the premise that sending work overseas to increase profit margins is the right way to manage a financial services company. I am sure the Capital One executives salivating over how much they will be able to sell stock options for might disagree with me. anonymous insider, 07/24/2005 01:42:18 PM Captial oneI work in Canada for Captial one and hate to break it to you, but we arent taking highly paid, highly skilled jobs from Americans, this is call centre work for ten bucks an hour, ur better off without it, believe me gfdgdf, 07/28/2005 10:47:31 AM the other side of the coinevery one is talking of it jobs being outsourced to third world countries like India and Americans loosing their jobs. However has anyone ever known that India too faces the same problem in other industries!!!!!! Textile was once the largest industry in India. Almost 70% to 80% of people in cities like Bombay and Surat depended on textile industry. However due to the so called 'Globalisation' of the market and entry of American big shot companies here millions yes I mean millions of textile workers have lost their jobs. Of the almost 1000 or more textile mills in Bombay only a dozen remain, that too in bad shape. all this because the USA can afford to sell their goods for much lower price...which we Indians cant. Today Millions of Indians are Unemployed due to the "OUTSOURCING of Indian textile industry to USA", and india is not rich enough to support these unemployed with welfare etc. these just have to resort to other means of income like sweeping the roads or doing housework. its not surprising to see a graduate work as a sweeper in India today. Many children have had to stop their education as their parents lost their jobs....... Well Americans stop being egocentric all the times and try to look at the entire scenario. If a few thousand jobs have come to India from USA then please remember millions have gone out from here to USA. i would seriously want to know what u people have to say to this sam, 09/08/2005 09:36:58 AM Too many peopleMaybe India should slow down their population growth. The US has it's own problems, but all you third world countries could solve yours with birth control. What happened to getting a transistor radio if you would just get snipped. Slow Down Cousins, 09/26/2005 09:38:49 AM World PoliceOk, so there's alot of blame going around regarding lost jobs in America. I have to admit that I've also been a bit shaky ever since I started seeing jobs being sent overseas to other countries. As an individual and an American, I don't enjoy the prospect of someone else taking my job. I've already seen so many people get laid off while their jobs are sent to third world countries that it sickens me. Now there's the topic of growth among America companies. Let's face it: corporate America is greedy. Most corporations and the governments backing up outsourcing are defending themselves with the ROI numbers generated by outsourcing, but the truth is that many companies are doing nothing with that money. Instead of pouring it into other jobs or fields, companies are simply pocketing this money or giving it to those employed on an executive level. Then there's the issue of the jobs being created. Someone needs to remind America that there is no next rung, no new boom to create those jobs such as there was with the dawn of the computer or the television age. Now it seems that there are a growing number of consultant jobs popping up for U.S. workers, and these jobs are a far reach, seeking mostly candidates with MBAs. Wouldn't it be nice if everyone attended 5, 6, or 7 years at a university just to become a consultant? Nice, but very unrealistic, and America does not need to be a nation of consultants and executives. Large corporations forget that the vast majority of America depends on those jobs being sent overseas. At the very least, why aren't we seeing a significant price drop in the products we buy if they're being manufactured at 1/10th the cost? Wake up America! Stop policing the world and take care of things back home! Until things are peachy keen here, we have no business sacrificing our own needs to benefit others. This will only lead to riots, revolts, and an economy as poor as those in countries we're trying to help. Freaking Out in MIA, 10/04/2005 10:32:54 AM Globalization and its discontentsFriends - globalization means more competition, and the only way to beat the competition is thru value addition. Since I joined the workforce about 12 years ago, I have been shipped-around all over the globe (Russia, UAE, US, India) in pursuit of the next-best opportunity. MY ONLY ADVICE to all my friends that are losing jobs like me is to: -Hit the books (again!) and make learning a life-long given. Dont hate GE for what it did - emulate it. Remember Jack Welch tearing up strong companies to build better ones? Its called creative-destruction. Be like GE - constantly re-invent yourself and dont be stuck with labels of "I'm a techie" or "I'm a Medical industry guy". -Be open to relocating outside US. Its not THAT bad - I've been there. Thank God to globalization, I've never been far from a Budweiser, Marlboro or MTv wherever I have worked. Yes, other countries dont have Vegas and most do not have strip clubs or bars to rival our own but Hey! as long as you are employed, you can find your pleasures elsewhere. The debate whether globalization is good or bad will go on for a long time and I find that I dont have luxury of time. So friends - ADAPT and SURVIVE!!! kicked-around-the-globe, 10/28/2005 10:51:41 AM RemovedThis comment was removed as it contained offensive content. Confused, 11/15/2005 09:07:52 PM Dont forget its a FLAT WORLD out thereWest talked about open economy, democracy, etc all being great stuffs. India welcomed capitalist ideologies and has started to open itself to the world. Now it looks to be the western world is closing down its economy calling rest of the folks foreingers. The Land of immigrants is complaining now saying the largest democracy in the world is exploiting it. Choice is always good for an economy. It helps to bring the prices down and helps the customer. Its a flat world with no boundarties and you have a choice..... Joy S, 12/11/2005 07:21:57 PM You're quite rightYou're quite right the world is flat and two-dimensional. It’s all about making money for upper management and stockholders. Two-dimensional money and more money for the few at the top and keep the rest of us just above the poverty level. It must be nice that slavery is not dead and there are plenty of takers all over the flat world. Indentured Servant, 12/17/2005 05:02:56 PM Outsourcing Jobs to Foreign CountriesWhy hasn't some large Law Firm started a class action in behalf of displaced workers just as they did against the tobacco industry? As an IT professional, I can't get a job in my own country making a measley 25K per year as a help desk support person so that I can maintain my home in Syracuse NY. I went back to school for a career change to a medical coder and biller. Now I must be bilingual. Gee, I wonder why? Is it because our government has embraced a multi-cultural environment to make sure that the middle class support the rich forever and that those of us who graduated college with business degrees never become well-to-do. Of course, this is a woman speaking - one who has been mostly a lower class citizen all her life. Somebody ought to send George Bush and the Congress to the moon and Congress be taken over by the middle class. Alix Summerfield, 12/28/2005 02:24:47 AM Placing Blame Where Blame Is RequiredThe biggest reason for outsourcing, is indeed money. but not only is it to save money on employees. Due to the lack of "intelligence for our actions", we have put ourselves in a downward spiral of lawsuits and stupidity. We can sue for pretty much anything these days, including harassment. Because the law isn't specific on the description of harassment, a couple of phonecalls to collect some bills, could be concidered an "attack". We can only blame ourselves for this mess. Moving to a call center out of the country relinquishes the corporation of any real "control" over the phonecalls being made. Thus allowing less lawsuits to the corporation, and more "lost-suits" because you can never really find out which call center you are talking to. Capital One has 8-10 call centers all over the globe. Being that Canada is a multicultural country as well, East Indians, Chinese, Jamacan, African, and Caucassian people are able to pick up the phone at any time. Canada has more than 2 call centers, so even asking where they are located wont help matters. THIS IS OUR FAULT. WE DID THIS. Corporate greed isn't the only greed present... American greed is there too. Too many people have tried to rip into the companies, just for doing what has been agreed upon; collecting debts (if you read your contracts, you'll see it in there). Things like,"YOU'RE CALLING TO LATE!", or "THIS IS THE THIRD CALL YOU'VE MADE THIS WEEK!", or even "YOU JUST WOKE MY KIDS/SPOUSE!"... All these statements had led to one thought... "I should sue them for harassment, then i can use the money to pay my bill ..."<--(American Greed At Work) Yes, Capital One is a faceless corporation that really doesn't care for it's customers or employees. And yes, money is important to them. But be realistic, if we didn't put ourselves on the highest pedestal above all other countries, would we be saying things like this --> "THOSE INDIANS STOLE OUR JOBS!" C'mon really?!? You can actually say something like that and look in the mirror without asking what's wrong with you? Globalization seems to be progressing, we can't stop it... So, DEAL WITH IT. Doak, Jersey City, 01/12/2006 09:37:06 AM Idea is good but brain is yours..Its all part of what people say "Globalisation". Its you(americans) who bring this concept into this world, with the idae of concuring foreign markets. Now when it became a Boomerang for you, you started opposing it. When you fell into a pit you yourself created, there is no meaning in blaming others. Be bold and accept it :) aby (UK), 01/14/2006 03:05:23 PM Paranoia? If outsourcing is all that bad, then how come these CEO's who are obviously very well qualified, don't see the same point of view? An individual can choose to live with his/her fears. Tomorrow someone will blame outsourcing for his nose bleed or his rectile dysfunction. I understand jobs are being shelved, but then aren't services becoming cheaper? There's a flip side to mostly everything, which I think is being ignored in this article. Keith B, 01/25/2006 12:19:53 PM you're kidding"CEO's who are obviously very well qualified" You're joking aren't you? This is the position that a company would definitely benefit from outsourcing. In fact it's already being done. The quality of education does not pertain just to the workers. There's an Indian company that offers upper management support all the way to the top. Wouldn't it make sense to have people run a company that have already been way more successful at it than our corporate flunkies. Look at Ford. There CEO obviously failed and he gets a raise and lays everyone off. Capital One continues to have record profits yet they continue to torture the employees that made it successful. CEO's just ain't all that, 02/04/2006 11:11:15 AM Outsourcing?Thank God that my company refuses to play the outsourcing game. If you call our Call Center, you'd better be able to understand Kentucky. For all of you displaced, outsourced workers, I will not be laid-off again! I am self-employed, making excellent money, and I love it. And I'm in a field that is exploding-VoIP. You can too. Learn More Here Steve T, 03/09/2006 01:19:22 AM Poor serviceI have yet to find a company that is satisfied with the outsourcing of IT. It has created new positions, though, called executive support. It seems that upper management, that outsources IT positions, does not want the poor service that is forced on the lower echelon employees. If a company chooses to save money (yeah right) on poor service then the whole company should use that service. U, 03/11/2006 09:27:36 AM its inevitablewell, sorry guys and gals, we are going to have to accept it. corporate america is full of self centered wackcos. its a dirty little secret that these companies not only reward these people, they seek them out. every decent person in a managment postion is quickly disposed of until they can find some a-hole to screw everyone so they can benefit themselves. its the american way. i once had hope that the consumer would speak with thier money and avoid companies that were agressivley outsourcing. but to my dismay i found people didnt care about others as long as they thought that they would save some money for themselves. the sad thing is the restaurant worker who thinks outsourcing in IT is a good thing will soon find out that it isn't once the IT jobs are gone and he loses his job becuase no one comes to his retaurant any more. Have insurance premiums decreased? Bank fees gone done? Instead, the rich are richer and the poor are poorer. what can we do? the politions I contacted told me to train myself, the last 3 years i trained in new IT technologies to make me more marketable. so i trained. what happened? my salary stayed flat while i watched many of my friends get whacked, my insurance costs tripled, and then i was finally laid off and replaced with an offshore worker. now, i have an undetermined short period of time to train these workers to do my job. is the company saving money? there will be 3 offshorers and a manager managing them. no, they didnt save, but the scum sucking pig of a manager who said offshore points out that we saved moeny becuase these 3 resources would have cost what 3 americans did, so they saved tons of money. now the company gives the manager a big bouus, and the co. has not saved a dime. in fact they are paying more because they are paying a manager to manager the offshore resources, which probably costs more alone than the one american that was doing the job alone in the first place. but the thing is, the system works for the good old boy network at the top of the corporate food chain. you think that the politions are running the country? its big business. it is a gloom outlook for the average joe. i say if you can, join the outsourcing company that took your job and try and work in the seat that you once sat in as an employee. and then learn the terms scope creep and we can do whatever you want but its going to cost you. maybe the next line of managers can then come along and have a novel idea, bring the IT in house to get control over costs. screwed, 05/11/2006 09:03:43 PM about outsourcing from an IndianThe problem lies in still considering India and America to be two different entities. Guys! Today we are living in a global village and if you lose a job to some other person in US itself you wouldn't have reacted like this. India has faced repeated exploitations over centruies by invaders because of its prosperity. Just 50 years ago we have got our independence from the British regime, yet we bear no animosity towards them. We are open to recieving education and offering our services to other nations. While millions of indians do not have even the basic needs like food, is it our fault to offer our services for less? Don't we have a chance to recoup from all the losses? An Indian., 06/08/2006 05:46:43 AM BunkI wish the world would follow China's example and limit families to one child and then sterilize the parents. No it's not India's fault it's greedy company management. Why in the world do people who watch people work make more than people who work. Pay me the same and just let me go to meetings all day and then get golf balls with my name on them. And...let the stock holders vote on the CEO compensation. A CEO (and I mean no CEO) is worth over 500 times the pay of the lowest paid worker. If the CEO wants more pay then increase the bottom also. WORKERS NEED RIGHTS IN ALL COUNTRIES Bunk, 06/09/2006 10:37:04 PM capital oneYou will need to treat capital one as 2 problems. One as outsoursing and the other more serious is the fraud issue. I have not heard one person speak who is willing to put pressure on their elected officials to investigate and prosecute the fraud being committed. Robert, 07/06/2006 12:15:32 AM Just wasting my time like everyone else...I find many of these postings hilarious. I couldn't help but to add something. I have a multitude of comments to make but will try to stick to several points. 1st- Cap one is not evil if they give you fines i have a cap one card and find it to be great! Cap one was the only company that would give me a credit card b/c of my lack of credit history and one or two errors i made in college. b/c i have used it with some responsibility(paid bills on time/kept low balance AFTER accruing a higher total amount-trick to raising credit. Credit agencies base a section of your score on what % of your available credit you are using. They can't see your preset max, but only what the highest amount you have put on there. Therfore run up a high total 1 month and then pay it off COMPLETELY the next month and maintain a low balance) I have improved my credit score. Don't blame cap one or any other credit card company b/c you used your card irresponsibly and received fines-which were in the details that you agreed to when you signed up for not paying on time or over running your limit. 2nd issue: Customer Service Yes it's not good customer service when you cannot understand the person who is supposed to be helping you. Esp. true in financial or technical matters- credit cards, student loans, computer support. But you cannot blame the people in India or other place around the world. Anyone who blames them is very ignorant. If you were in there shoes, wouldn't you take a better paying job to support yourself and your family? If I was making $800/YEAR and could make $4,000 of course I would. Same is true in America if you were offered a $100,000 raise to answer IT problems or be a cust service person for people in Japan, wouldn't you do it. Seriously, how many languages can you speak? They are at least speaking 2!(or trying) I may not like their service but I can appreciate how hard they are working. Point 3- You can't blame the CEO's and executives completely. For those who sit at the top and are the founders of the oompany-they should make as much they want. Through their forsight, determination, and sacrifice they have created thousands of jobs. How many have you created? AS for the CEO who made his way to the top, perhaps he should have a limit to waht he makes, but you have to understand many of them worked plenty of 90+ hour work weeks to get their. Starting at the bottome of the barrel, like you and I. Every person comes into a company with a ser of responsibilities-you keep your job by doing those. You rise to the top by doing more than your co-worker, and showing your dedication and intellectual capabilities. Each level of a company maintains more responsibility than the previous, and each level should get mor pay because there are fewer people who can AND WILL do what it takes to get there. (Supply and Demand) So naturally the person who is at the top of 30,000 people should make much more because his or her talents are rare. Perhaps only 29,900 people in the same company couldn't or are not willing to do the same job. That makes them a rare commodity. Think of them as a rare diamond in the middle of a coal mine. You have to go through a lot of common dirt and coal to find a perfect diamond. CEO's sacrifice other things like family time along the way to the top. also, they are responsible for 30,000 jobs. How many are you responsible for? IF they make one wrong move they can cost the company millions and many people jobs. Talk about stress! And not all or money greedy and don't care about everyone else. They like us have tasks to do and daily responsibilities. Keep in mind their decision effect many. So they have to cut jobs? well so what? thats life. You should be thankful the company was able to grow to the size it was and gave you a job in the first place. They don't just cut jobs for the fun of it. 10,000 job cuts my save all 30,000 jobs from being lost. Companies can only stay soo big for so long. Again, until you are a CEO and have to live their lifestyle and do what it takes to keep that job. You shouldn't judge. Odds are if you were more efficient at your job the company would not be in such bad shape. 4.- You can't summarize a whole group of people based on a few. Esp'ly if you don't truly know anyone in that group. You can make claims like "all the indians, or americans, or ceo's suck" I would guess that most of you that made those statements don't even have a friend this Indian or American or is a CEO. So, how can you make such a statement. This ignorance and false accusations only breeds more misunderstanding and hatred towards others that we dont even know. Yes, I dislike speaking to Indians when I am trying to get an answer to my computer issues, bt I can't say they are stupid. After all, they speak 2 languages and are the ones who can fix the issue. At the same time, they can't claim "all americans" are greedy and arrogant. People are just peolpe wherever you go. They only want what is best for themselves and their family. And if someone offered you a ceo position and 12 million a year. Do you really think you would turn it down? 5. A greater good. The only way any local, national, or world problem can be fixed is by trying to understand other peoples situation and providing a solution before becoming more of the problem. Find out why they made that decision and work together to help each other out where we can. If we had stricter punishments in the US we would not have the crime levels we do. That would help save companies money and bring the consumers cost down. If the courts would not allow multi million dollar law suits to occur in courts this would help as well. (ie lady from mcdonalds who spilled coffee in her lap and sued b/c it was too hot. Duh? why did she set it in her lap? did she expect it to be cold?) Frivilous law suits and greed come from common people. These ridiculous suits clog up our court systems from addressing real issues. (this is whole other topic) Anyway, not overreacting to situations, making outrageous claims, understanding and helping others, and being personably responsible for your own actions will go along ways. Hope I helped solve some of the worlds problems here or at least gave some people something to respond to. I wish the best to everyone, American, Indian, Middle-Eastern person, etc... If you aren't solving a problem, odds are you are a part of one. 2complex4onedebate, 08/05/2006 07:56:07 PM get your sh!t straightok there are some ignorant and racist people posting on this forum. a lot of you all don't seem to understand what exactly outsourcing is, and are using it as an excuse to justify your own personal biases outsourcing is simply paying another company to perform services or functions that you don't want to perform yourself because doing so saves money, time, effort and other resources; i.e. there are plenty of non-accounting businesses who outsource their financial reporting, etc. to accounting firms b/c accounting is not their primary business function. creating a special department for non-primary functions requires unnecessary resources and is a waste of money. so i ask all you bigots what is the difference between a company outsourcing to a regional US accounting firm or an Indian/Chinese/whatever firm? from the internal perspective, if there was an accounting department within the company, those people would lose their jobs either way. so why is there never a substantial outcry over domestically outsourced jobs?....bias anyone? the only real difference is that the outsourcing business saves more money. you can chalk the loss of jobs up to shareholder/ceo greed, but don't get racist value is created to both the indian and us companies, and granted, india in general may benefit more temporarily, but in the long run the supply of these higher paying jobs will raise the standard of living and eventually equalize at a certain price...the point being that outsourcing will not result in everyone in america losing their jobs, it will (through free market competition) level the global playing field. get your sh!t straight, 10/03/2006 03:26:15 PM You don't deserve a working wageThe US doesn’t get their slaves from Africa any longer. They’ve branched out to Indian, the Philippines and Mexico. The US does not have a working mentality and wants to manage the world. BIG BUSINESS RULES WOO HOO. Why pay ignorant workers, I have a MBA. Management, 10/24/2006 06:58:48 AM TaxI'm a manager at CapOne and the CEO made 5,208 times what I made last year. I would hope that the CEO paid at least 25 mill in taxes. The company receives millions in tax breaks and receives incentives from the govt. CapOne should give a ton back to support this country and not give it all to senators. FLM, 10/29/2006 01:01:05 PM Minimum WageRemember when you see that a companies few receive very large paychecks, that this money is the regular workers dead retirement plans. This is money that could have been profit sharing or money for national or state parks. This is money that can be hidden in tax loopholes for the wealthy. The elections were just a start of the revolution so don’t get too comfortable on your golden towers. The regular workers who “just do their job” will regain their place in America. Regular guy, 12/21/2006 07:18:33 AM Shame on Big BuisnessThanks for all of you who preach the truth about the financial and moral decay of US workers. I live in the New England area and I cannot stress how many manufacturing jobs have packed up or downsized on account of outsourcing production and/or labor. I work as an admin in a few of the really large US companies mainly insurance and pention services. As an insider I can tell you it puts a tremendous strain on the remaining staff to deal with extra work loads and the problems of the language barriers that come to play. People we need to demand that local or federal government penalize big buisness for their actions and demand they keep job here. Do CEOs really need another fat bonus at the price of our families and welfare?? Deep Thinking, 01/31/2007 11:10:09 AM outsourcingdont foget about wachovia and suntrust being outsourced in india. blahblah, 03/15/2007 01:16:17 PM RemovedThis comment was removed as it contained offensive content. Angry American, 08/15/2007 09:24:43 AM outsourcing issueit is u people(americans) introduced the concept of globalisation to the world.at that time itself u should have thinked about all these things.globalisation effected many indian companies.when we told about that u people didnt understand that.after u got affected u came know about that. anitha, 08/22/2008 04:24:58 AM GlobalizationAmericans didn't introduce the notion of globalization. A network of elite power brokers did, unfortunately we have the displeasure of having a large number of these power brokers in positions of power in American industry and government. No American would do this to another American. On the way out, 09/22/2008 04:08:34 PM
