School's tech curriculum boring
Friday, 20 June 2008

There's an interesting story over at Business Week about how boring tech classes are putting kids off studying IT. It's specifically about Britain, but it appears to be just as relevant here. It seems all over the Western world, fewer and fewer school leavers are choosing to study IT.

It seems most tech classes in school focus on Word and Excel, which is hardly of great interest to high school kids. Instead, experts feel deeper IT skills should be taught.

"The current curriculum is having an extremely negative impact on young people's attitudes to IT," Karen Price, CEO of tech industry skills body e-skills UK, is quoted as saying. "Young people are not choosing to study [computer sciences]. We're sitting on a time-bomb, quite frankly."

Personally, I think a big problem is the IT industry's image problem. I'm not talking about how it's perceived to be full of nerds. Instead, I think many people see IT as a very risky career choice, with lots of ups and downs. It's seen as an area where you can be earning big money one year, and sitting at home with your career over the next.

When I was young, studying IT was seen to have a promising future. I just don't get that people are having that impression any more.

Read the full story at Business Week (thanks Aaron).

Accurate PK

IT suffers from so many problems.

1) No job security.

2) Poorly paid (considering the hours).

3) Shocking reputation.

4) Filled with nerds.

5) No women!

6) Generally, crap and boring work.

7) Crap managers looking over their shoulders waiting for the pink slip.

8) Plagued by "recruiters" and their shonky practices (frankly, I don't know why they are still in business).

9) Plagued by the likes of the ACS and ITCRA.

10) No political clout and hence irrelevant from a Government policy point of view.

Keep gobbling down the SSRI's losers.

Could be turned around easily.

I agree that more needs to be done to educate the IT guys of tomorrow. But I don't think a lack of interest is a problem. The kids of today use the internet constantly, they blog, they have facebook. They play Grad Theft Auto on their playstations/xboxs They use ipods, mobile phones (all of which rely heavily on IT). But they use them with a "black box" mentality...they don't care what goes on inside/how they work. What the IT educators need to do is turn that interest into a learning focus. More comms, more web programming at an earlier age. Also need to train up the teachers. I still remember being tought my first IT classes back in high school by an old crusty who barely knew how to turn on a computer (but could interpret binary and hexadecimal). That said it was over 16 years ago...

There's always hope in the wind

I went through a period where I could boot up and network mini-computers, but new next to nothing about PCs.

The currently stood-down NSW education Minister is a great fan of open systems

What problem?

Do I care that less people are coming into IT. Absolutely not!!. It's good for the people that are in the industry. More negotiation power, higher pay.

Gloomy - Poorly paid - not. A lot of people just do 9-5 and nudge the $90-100K base. Or go contracting on an hourly rate. Then you'll LOVE extra hours, :-)).

Crap and boring work - not. More around a bit. Learn some business stuff as well. anyway, can't say Accounting for example is really exciting work.

Australia sucks

$90-100k. Big deal. You can get that doing pretty much anything. People like their internet and playstations but you don't have to be einstein to know the work behind it is boring.

What? So everyone who likes music is going to spend 10 years learning the piano? People who like TV are all going to go and buy Dick Smith kits and become electronics experts? Yeah right, that got nailed and sent offshore decades ago.

They're all doing accounting and business because yeah it's boring, but you don't end up CEO making millions a year and getting bonuses sending IT jobs offshore by studying comp sci.

Um, how about they pay people more and stop being so arrogant with job requirements? Oh no we can't have those nerds turning into life's winners can we! Gotta pay those useless turds in HR and give a huge cut to the recruitment agencies.

Story should have read: "Gen Y and Z aren't morons."

Story should have read: "Gen Y and Z aren't morons."

I'm very impressed by Y and Z. They watched their parents get slaughtered and have learnt well without having to go through it themselves.

Suffer and starve

Well I won't be counting on living on a gov pension unless I want to starve!!!

Instead of buying a house I might just retire early and have a nice life in another country.....

an ex-ITer who posts on an IT contractor board that all the other posters are "losers".

Gloomy seem man of problem and depress. Been there once mates losts love of pretty woman. Then spend ten days alone in wild in depress and angry. One night large leopard appear. Eyes fire red under moon light's. But without attack disapper in night. With life spare finds healing, inner peace and power.

Dr Leopard try prescription for Gloomy. Take leave in Australian wilds. Live with natives and wild dog in northern province. Find healing. Return to world new man. Natural always better than drug.

Re: Medicinal for gloomy

The one thing that would depress me is to work in the IT industry.

Anyone that ever worked and is working in the IT industry is a loser!

Gloomyshoes, 06/22/2008 11:06:11 AM
"...Not too bright, thouh...."

"Anyone that ever worked and is working in the IT industry is a loser!"

It sounds like Gloomy just admitted what we all already knew: he is a looser...
