Is Java dying?
Monday, 23 June 2008

There's been a couple of interesting links sent to me by our friend Aaron. They both suggest Java's days may be numbered.

Firstly and most alarmingly, is a graph of demand for Java skills in job ads from the UK. It appears that demand for such skills is in long term decline. Scroll down to see it.

And according to a story at CNet, Java book sales have been plummeting for years. That's in sharp contrast to books on C#, JavaScript and Ruby.

"Sun Microsystems is hedging its bets on web scripting languages, recently adding Python experts to its fold," CNet says. "So perhaps Sun will weather the storm. Regardless, even despite its five-year slide, Java still holds the biggest share of the book-buying market, as this chart shows."

Nevertheless, Java still holds the biggest share of the computer book market. So maybe there's hope yet.

Read the full story at CNet (thanks Aaron).

Which bit of Java?

To die a death like 'C' and 'C++'. Once upon a time I found a programming language called 'Python'. I sold to the 'management' on the basis of cross-platform development, and almost got it accepted. I even put some effort into learning it, now many years down the track - it's popular!

I don't really care, as I've moved into management. Generally a business will concentrate on a fad, rather than a strategic idea, and real programming languages add to the strategy.

I want a penny for every time java 'dies'

Yeah yeah... Java is dying....

I wouldn't need to work if i got a penny everytime i heard that java was dying.

Java is a mainstream corporate language, it's not going anywhere, and languages like Ruby, Python, Groovy don't even really count as competition since they have a different target audience (quick and dirty rather than quality and maintainability)

Java in mature phase

According to the technology lifecycle bellcurve Java is in a mature phase, where it is experiencing decreasing demand.

In general, technology lifecycles appear to be shrinking, which means that tech skills are being made obsolete at an increasing rate.

The implications for Java people are that competition for jobs may heat up as seniors compete for a dwindling supply of positions. This could cause rate rises to stop or even reverse. Still, with such a large Java codebase out there, I'd say there will be jobs for another 10-20 years.

Rates in a technologies twilight years are quite spikey. They can shrink rapidly due to oversupply, or in some cases spike rapidly due to previous practitioners leaving the field.

re:Great Iguana Run Wild

Well, I think the reason for Labour low poll rating, is plans for privatisation NSW electrical utilities.

The results will be as usual. The cost will be cut. The important maintenance workers will be fired ,

The prices will continuously rise, as in private health insurance.

The quality and reliability will fall.

The Labour reach mates will prosper and enjoy.
