The best-paid places to work in IT
Friday, 26 October 2007
There's an interesting post over at consulting company Mercer's website about global IT pay levels. Australia comes in 10th and second-highest in Asia-Pacific behind Hong Kong.
The number one place to get paid in the world according to the survey is (... drum-roll ...) Switzerland. The lowest is Vietnam, although Asia generally ranks low.
"Based on gross annual total cash, IT staff at all levels are paid the most in Switzerland, where the IT Manager job pays an average of $140,960 annually," the post says. "The same job level in Denmark (the second-highest-paying country) pays $123,080, while Belgium (3) pays an average of $121,170. The UK and Ireland are ranked 4 and 5, with an average pay of $118,190 and $108,230, respectively. In the United States, the average IT manager earns $107,500 a year compared with Canada (8) at $93,860."
I've worked in the UK and applied for jobs in Europe before and I can attest that they pay WAAAAAAY better than jobs here. Think double or more. But this is hardly a great secret.

where can i get top dollar in Asia Pac?serious qu..? wot sort of rates can a good looking, top notch c++/java programmer with bags of investment banking experience get in honkers or singapore? i'm bored of Australia... brownie, 10/25/2007 10:10:07 AM Asia Pac salaryThe gross salary in Asia Pac is generally lower compared to Aus, but since the tax levels are way lower so you can get a lot more after tax in the asian region. It depends on what you can squeeze in your job offer, accomodation etc can be packaged, added in to your salary which then means more dollars. Guyc, 10/25/2007 12:14:17 PM Asia PacBrownie, Go to Honkers instead of Singapore. Singapore is boring. I thought you would be making good money in the investment banking world. My mate just got a job at one of those $$$ factories earning 90-100 p/hr doing web-methods/.NET -ish kind of stuff. Anyway, not too sure how much they pay, but they do respect the skills/quals of western expats as opposed to some of our south asian friends (from what I've heard). KillaKoala, 10/25/2007 05:35:56 PM Job AdviseOh Brownie not listen for sleepy Koalas. Boredom maybe as Springbok beat Aussie and UK. Or fear for Kevin Rudds new clown prime minister? Move now South Africa or India for cricket champs. Great Leopard, 10/25/2007 06:41:55 PM Dont go to Hong KongDont go to Hong Kong. Spent 5 years there and, despite getting paid great money, had to put up with the ignorance and arrogance of Hong Kong Chinese. This put me right off in the end and I left. Dont go to Hong Kong, 10/25/2007 10:53:37 PM Pay, TAX, COLOk so we know the pay, but as was already mentioned, tax is a factor and so is the cost of living....after that is taken into account is switzerland still the best? f, 10/25/2007 11:26:07 PM paidLet me work it out: $1000 - (expences + taxes) = 615 $615 * 5 days = $3075 $3075 * 52 = $159900 Far out Im Rich.... UnemployedITer, 10/26/2007 02:52:05 AM UnemployedITerHey UnemployedITer, anyone that had been unemployed as long as you havewould have aquired a taste for cream chees on crackers as opposed to Pate!!!!!
